Why an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire?

Why an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire?

a. Better than Lagaan          c. Mere Luck

b. Better than Guru             d. It is written

What is so special about this movie that it made it to the Oscars? This would be the first question that pops up an Indian mind.. What makes this movie special? Exploring the reasons...

The Plot:

A well explored and frequently attempted "Rags to Riches" saga in Indian movies is the plot in Slumdog Millionaire too.. If Oscars are not for the Lagaan or the Guru, why is it for the Slumdog Millionaire? Digging more into the reasons for why this movie got splendid recognition and made it to the Oscars..the explicit reasons would be...  This is not a movie that is being made to contest in Filmfare or National awards that are well recognized in India

This has been made by the West for the West!

We have made and seen thousands of movies that are about the same plot and shot even more convincing and better. But this movie is not for comparison with the ones that are made in India!

This would probably be the first movie made by the West solely on Indian grounds with Indian actors on the plot of Slum Dwellers of Mumbai!

Why are Indian movies not recognized in the West?

Well, many would find it may not necessary. It is not true that it has never been recognized.. Most Indian movies are not exposed to the westerners. Even if the same Slumdog Millionaire was shot by Indian directors I really doubt if it would have made these heights. The problem is not in the movie making... It is in the marketing. The movie makers in the West, before releasing it to the public makes sure that they attempt to get the movie in to the list of contestants in the film festivals.

Take it the Cannes or the Berlin International or the Shanghai International or the Habitat International or the Screen Actors Guild or the Golden Globe or the Oscars. And when a movie has its mettle it does gets its recognition in these festivals and it becomes a marketing quote for the movie makers...

In case of Indian movies, attempts are seldom made for getting movies to contest on these festivals.

Here is the story in the north;

Movies like "Devdas", "Black" or "Satya" which are well directed and well cast too. Slumdog doesn't stand a chance against "Rang De Basanti". All these movies did receive its recognition in India.. But should have been watched and admired by westerners too

Here is the south side story;

In case of movie like "July Ganapathy" made by our very own Balu Mahendra, the producers just didn't remember the dates and so they missed to compete in National Awards in India only!!

We really need to appreciate the efforts made from S pictures in getting movie like "Veyyil" into Cannes International and other festivals for competing. And so will have to appreciate the "Paruthi Veeran" team in getting it competed in Berlin Film festival

But, Why an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire?

Slumdog managed to Oscars as it is made in a language that the west can understand. It is in English! This would be the first movie made in English on the plot of Slum Dwellers! But this reason is not suffice for a movie to get nominated for the Oscars. The story telling is interesting comparing the “Curious case of Benjamin Button”.

Going forth and back in the movie enlisting the incidents that took place in the protagonist's life. The interesting part in the screenplay makes the audience involved in the movie are the questions in "Who wants to be a Millionaire" relates to the events that took place in his life. A smart move by the story tellers to sketch their protagonist a Muslim and take advantage of the riots that took place after the attempt on Babri Masjid demolition! This helped the makers to add reason to Jamal and his brother Salim being orphaned and so they are made to travel the path that they travel in their life. Much of the story is told by perfect editing as well...

I find the whole movie as a 2 hr relay running kick started by the young Jamal[Ayush Mahesh Khedekar] and Salim [Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail] continued by middle aged Jamal[Tanay Chheda] and Salim[Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala] and Latika[Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar] to be followed by current age Jamal[Dev Patel], Salim[Madhur Mittal], Latika[Freida Pinto], and other characters. The pace set by the younger actors had so much acceleration for the movie... the actors following manage to keep the initial promise to its fullest.

A word of appreciation will have to be definitely left for the director! It is explicit in the movie that how much research he did before getting into movie making. This movie has captured every detail involved in the area that the plot is set on. There was no exaggeration of any of the events that were shown in the movie. Movie is as good as if Ram Gopal Varma or Mani Ratnam would have shot the same plot... Thought narrating style would have been different. It had so much detailing in it.

All such points were not just enough for Slumdog to get itself nominated for Oscars. It did go thru its rough path of being considered for DVD first by Warner Independent Pictures. But then when it was showcased in Telluride Film Festival where it received its positive response from the audience which helped the production house to get it played in Toronto International Film Festival which was continued by the awards and recognition that it gained so that it could reach the Oscars.

Lesson's to be learned:

Well it's high time we learn marketing skills from the West! Than, the money that we could make when our movies travel shores. It’s the recognition for the Indian talent around the world will help us explore new horizons.

When the production houses in India can spend so much money and effort in making good movies now it’s high time they spend that extra little effort to get these movies contested in the film festivals too... so that the efforts and talents are recognized throught the world...

If movies like "Gandhi" and "Slumdog Millionaire" made by the Westerers on the plot based in India can get Oscars and well recognized throught the world. It is certainly clear that, we have stories to tell the world and let's do it like never before as we can tell our stories better than outsiders!

  1. slumdog millionaire is agud movie but i wuld say there r many movies in india which r far far better than slumdog but din get an oscar slumdog has nle some connection with india the story is based on india then ar rehman anil kapoor and some technicians if this team had worked for a film which is based on some other country r totally a diff story line ppl wuld not have responded much for tis movie if it gets an oscar then it is purely bcos of that the production house is 2oth century fox and the director is a american

there have been many miovies which had a superior screenplay than this movie....in india
we have heyram, tzp, lagaan, nayagan,so many can be mentioned.....

i wuld say slumdog is inspired from many movies nttng wrong in it.....forrest gump is a inspiration he does anything and everything and becums big in life but he is a stupid as per the doctors report in the film

here a slum boy who does all the work he can and gains knowledge out of it and its shown that the fate gives him chance to win the show...

forrest gump there is a gal that is his destiny same with slumdog
forrest gump the gal finnally becum a prostitute same with slumdog

    these r some visible similarities

i wuld say even tamil ma's love portion was in this grounds by searching of the lady love by the protaganist where ever he goes

same happens in slumdog he does not stop searching for his lady love....

thus i conclude that slum dog is not a great movie but it is in a place where it is promoted to oscar

even if tzp heyram and nayagan if promoted like this it wuld have got so many oscars...

cmg to ar. rehmans oscar its definetly a proud thing but his songs and bgm's where more gud in bombay movie than slumdog thats what i feel

The only thing it deserves an Oscar for is A.R. Rahman's music and cinemetography.Apart from that, there's nothing special about it.
And yeah, its not an "Indian" movie, really silly that so many retards are feeling "proud" about an Indian movie. It doesn't have anything to do with India apart from the crew and story setting whatsoever.

Slumdog is just pure share of luck & Hype
It was just pure luck, or call it..
destiny as it was written in the movie.

If people had watched more movies like
    Water,Pather Panchali, Aprarajitho etc
they wouldnt be amazed so much by the
movie making trend of Slumdog millionaire

For that fact even movies like "A wednesday"
is far better a concept to cherish

Im sure... Slumdog millionaire is just a lucky shot
for the Indian movie scenario cos a foreign film director
pitched into the rescue. Trust me,
was it a movie directed by an Indian director,
Mark my words.. it wouldn't have made it this far.

I have got nothing against this movie but trust me
I have seen far more better movies.

most of the things that u say r true...
but the things that matters in these cases is the publicity that the producers dare to make...
and looking in the facts even if an indian movie doesn't make upto to oscars that doesn't dilute its greatness.
oscar is not really a talent hunt, they just select the best they hav iin their hands...
its the own field of american and may b british filmmaker
so wen RDB, pather panchali or aparajito ddnt get oscar they didnt move a bit from their greatness.
even if they dnt, kno they r grt creations by masters in the field.
we r cherishing here because today one movie from our country has gone in there and they had to like it...
the way positive publicity is getting in bollywood, i'm sure in near future other works will b acknowledged.
we r enjoying beginning of a new tradition where we see india leading again...

  5. The main reason for the (other) Indian movies not being popular in the West is not marketing. It is because all our Indian movies are in Indian languages. I am pretty sure any Indian movie taken in English language would atleast get the westeners' attention, if not recognition or success.

"Even if the same Slumdog Millionaire was shot by Indian directors I really doubt if it would have made these heights." Again, if the movie was shot by Indian directors, it would have been in Indian language, which obviously pushes the movie away from the genereal category. Even if it were a critically acclaimed Indian movie, it would have gone only under Foreign Feature Film category. But for that, the movie should have really hit the jury.

India is still a developing country. I feel that the film has really exaggerated the life of below-poverty-line population of our country, which forces the westeners, who haven't visited India, to believe and pity the conditions. That too, with the slums of Mumbai, I think it is way too beyond actuality. Because, slums of Mumbai are considered to be comparitively in a very better state, than slums of other major Indian cities. I will definitely accept the appreciation for the director's efforts and research, but there could have been a little more transparency.

  6. I really appreciate your comments...

I did mention the movie being made in English was the highlight! But didn't explicitly mention that we need to tell our stories in English so that it gets its due attention!

I believe the Westerners digest foreign language movies easily! We in India are not exposed to foreign movies much! Only in case of Oscars movies made in Indian languages needs to compete in specific category! But that's not the case in European Film festivals... But many Indian movies don't reach such festivals!

n by the way a film can b nominated for oscars only if it is a hollywood movie apart from a special category,"best foreign language film"
so lagaan n all can not get a nominations xept for "best foreign film" category

    Roro -
It deserves cinematography, editing without a doubt. And latika's theme was so haunting - so original score!...And sound mixing. But i dunno about best film. Slumdog was better in its technical aspects than in its handling of the plot! But whatever, the way its going, it could end up winning everything - the west loves it(and so should we)

    nice analysis dude..

but i think lagaan , mother india ..and other have gone in foreign film category..and they
are eligible to compete in just this category.so also this further ,makes difficult.

taking slumdog ,my vote would have been with "benjamin button".

also marketing is important ,as can be gauged by the fact that a average "WRESTLER"
was also there in the nominations ....better they had taken "SINGH IS KING"

when i went to watch slumdog i prepared myself to be fully disappointed i had heard it was a over hyped movie which made fun of indian poverty but watching it i just had to love the movie. it was heartwarming and emotional. i could feel the desperation and love all through the movie. it was a movie filled with hope....

i agree that marketing is a main factor for winning oscars.... but truely slumdog deserved what it got is my opinion. i have seen laggan rang de though they r great is defenitely not better than slumdog

also all the other movies nominated this year were good but just not enough to match the brilliance of slumdog
milk was an awesome movie but just fell a little short of slumdog

again it is my opinion i agree tastes and preferences differ from person to person...
